Workshop description: Learn how to darn holes and thin spots in your knits and get your beloved sweaters ready for storage. We'll demonstrate three ways to darn knitwear:
  1. Invisible darns for small holes like snags or (the horrible no good) moth holes.
  2. Plain weave darn for bigger holes. This one can work on either knits or wovens.
  3. Swiss darn for reinforcing thin spots.
You'll learn through hands-on experience. Sweater fabric, scrap yarn, and darning needles will be provided for practice. If you prefer to work directly on your own mending pile, feel free to bring 1-3 knit objects and any matching yarn or embroidery floss you have. Thicker knits, such as sweaters, socks, or scarves will work better with this type of darning than a t-shirt weight knit.

You will leave with a sampler of the three darning types OR your own partially completed mending projects and the confidence to finish them.

Materials Needed:
1. Darning needles or tapestry needles, a mix of 2-3 sizes (13, 17, and 20 is a good mix) Straight or bent tip both work, this is a personal preference.
2. One embroidery hoop, around 4-7"
3. Small scissor or snips

Optional:
-A sweater or knit item in need of repair. Should be sweater like, not t-shirt material. If you are a knitter and have swatches from past projects would be perfect for practicing on. Instructor will also provide fabric to practice on.
- Mix of scrap yarns (fingering, sport, dk, worsted can all work) and embroidery floss.
- darning mushroom or egg if you already have them and want to mend socks or mittens

Experience: No prior  experience is necessary. While an understanding of knitting may help you pick up the skills quickly, it is not required.

*We ask that all materials are purchased prior to the class. If you need materials on the first day of class, please arrive early to make your purchases so as to not delay instruction
